Chelsea has a long association with the City through the Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race which starts at London Bridge and finishes in Chelsea. Each year the race is organised by the Fishmongers’ Company but it is the apprentices from the Watermen’s Company who compete for the famous scarlet coat and badge.
The Company of Watermen was established by Act of Parliament in 1555 to regulate Watermen and Wherrymen carrying passengers by boat under oars on the river Thames. In an age when there were few bridges this was a vital trade.
The present Hall dates back to 1780, and remains the only original Georgian hall in the City of London, it is a perfect example of eighteenth century architecture.
The cost of the visit is £15.00 including tea and coffee.
