was held on Monday 30th January 2017 at 6.30pm in the Small Hall at Chelsea Old Town Hall, and was attended by about 50 people
The composer Peter Warlock, was born in the Savoy Hotel, and died in Chelsea where he is commemorated by a plaque at 30 Tite Street.
Although he died in 1930, his magnetism is as potent as ever, and interest increases as his compositions, colourful life, and extensive literary and musical writings become better known. A Warlock Society, www.peterwarlock.org formed in 1963, now has 300 members in 14 countries, and they will visit his Chelsea haunts for the seventh time on 25th March 2017.
Warlock was quintessentially a man of Chelsea in its best artistic and slightly bizarre traditions, and his colourful lifestyle was remembered on this evening in slides and music by Malcolm Rudland – Secretary of the Peter Warlock Society and a distinguished organist. The Chairman and several members of the Warlock Society also attended.
Warlock composed 150 songs, some of which were sung this evening by Danny Gillingwater (tenor).
