The Chelsea Schools Essay Prize 2020
The Chelsea Society invites entries for its inaugural school essay competition on the subject of ‘My Chelsea’. The competition, which carries a prize of £500, is open to all Primary State and Independent Schools in Chelsea and it is the Society’s hope that schools will find it an interesting and exciting project for pupils who spend much of their day in this historic part of London.
The title and theme are deliberately non-prescriptive to allow pupils to reflect their own take on the subject and to assist teachers who could find it a useful classroom focus for various subjects on the curriculum and who may wish to build it into their teaching programme.
Entries should be 500 words in length and are restricted to Years 5 and 6. Each school is asked to select and submit a single entry no later than March 1 2020 to The Chelsea Society, which will decide and announce the final overall winner before the start of the Summer term 2020. The £500 prize will be awarded to the winning school and a £20 book voucher to the winning pupil. The Society will also award a year’s free membership to the Head Teacher of the successful school as well as to the parents of the winning pupil. The competition will also feature on the Society’s website: www.chelseasociety.org.uk
The Chelsea Society, which is 92 years old, was founded by local historian Reginald Blunt, and a distinguished group of local people, to protect the interests of all who live and work in Chelsea and to preserve and enhance its unique character. It continues in many ways to fulfil the founders’ ideals and has a large and committed membership which benefits from its many activities, from cultural events to its authoritative and respected interventions on planning issues. It is the Society’s hope that all Chelsea’s many primary and prep schools will find this an interesting and stimulating project. It would be appreciated if schools intending to take part could let us know by November 30 2019 by contacting Fleur de Villiers (Chelsea Society Council member) email: fleurdevilliers@gmail.com
