The fall of Margaret Thatcher- A whodunnit!

Event date | Jan 15, 2024

On Monday 15th January 2024 more than 100 members heard an authoritative and entertaing explanation of the last days in office of Margaret Thatcher, and the political forces at work within the Conservative Party at that time. We were joined by Paul Allen, who was Mrs. Thatcher’s hairdresser, and by the Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury.  The Marquess was a parliamentary colleague of Margaret Thatcher, and is a past-President of The Chelsea Society.

Charles Moore is the authorised biographer of Margaret Thatcher, and his final volume, Herself Alone, was published in 2019.

Charles presented a semi-dramatisation of the story, together with Kate Ehrman.

This was a fascinating insight into the critical moments prior to the Prime Minister’s resignation, based on Moore’s unique access to Mrs. Thatcher herself, her papers and her closest associates, and the letters and memoires of the politicians who were closely involved.

Charles Moore has been the Editor of The Spectator, The Sunday Telegraph and The Daily Telegraph. He continues as a columnist for the Daily Telegraph and The Spectator, and was created Lord Moore of Etchingham in 2020.

Kate Ehrman was on the editorial staff of The Spectator and assisted Charles Moore in the preparation of his biography of Margaret Thatcher. She writes book reviews for The Oldie and works for Garsington Opera.
