In 1719, Chelsea land owners and tenants successfully challenged the decision of the Royal surveyors which denied them the use of the King’s private road which they had previously enjoyed. Royal permission was then granted to locals to use the road to access their properties and the 300th anniversary of this decision will be commemorated in 2019 by a series of events which will explore the evolution of the King’s Road, Chelsea from a 17th century footpath to the world famous thoroughfare of the 21st century.
An exhibition exploring the origins of the King’s Road is currently at 325 King’s Road (corner of Beaufort St.) until January 30 2019 between noon and 7pm daily. Other events will follow.
